Thanks so much for your support,
The adventure continues.
Safe sailing.
Boat:
White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built.
The camera gear:
Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached.
Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera.
Editing:
Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff!
There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access.
Content:
I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining.
Comments and being at sea:
I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.

Yea baby!!❤😂🎉
Well Barry there you are, you o l e s e a dog. Nice to see you again, you o l e f u d y d u d y. You know the ropes and the seas for sure. Look forward to seeing you again you good distant friend.❤
I feel like I've waited so long for your Video. I'm glad to see you again. 😊
you mean you can't buy "line" out there. Sailing vessels don't use rope capt'n!
What is this with the Kiwis and Aussies ? Always finding ways to injure themselves!!
On the topic of Capt'n Cook, you have been missing for some time! i was going to check Davey Jones' log book to see if you checked in there lol.. Glad you are fine
great scenes
Your anchor issue in deeper water is why I bought a boat with a variable draft . 6.5 keel down , 25 inches keel up . Nearly the same boat as a southerly 110 but better built and better rudder. You can go in with the draft set at 4 feet , if you run aground the swing keel gently moves up , and you can press a button and sail off with 3 feet of draft or less . . At sea you set it at 6.5 feet lock it down and it goes up wind well and is self saving . With the keel; all the way up she can still take a knockdown to 140 degrees and come back up . All 13 hatches above the flood line in a knock down and the center cockpit can not hold enough water to compromise stability . The compromise is the cockpit is small , but the "back porch" on a center cockpit makes up for it as well as the flush huge fordeck of nearly 15 feet . 13 opening hatches including an opening windshield means a decent ventilation inside . PO added a sugar scoop on the stern that is fantastic for getting on and off or swimming and stores the dingy and propane tanks . Nothing is perfect the keel lift mechanism is in the way of the table , although there is a mod that fixes it I won't do . What is there is simple and robust. The keel/ ballast is 5700 lbs so the hydraulics to lift it matter . Part is encapsulated in the hull so not sure exactly what the keel weight. There are two manual back ups but in the worst case it just turns into a boat with a normal keel although I can not imagine both back ups failing given there are 3 ways to lift the keel . Also it is a wet head , meaning the head is also the shower. Boat is small by today's standards at 35 feet , plus the sugar scoop but that means easy to handle and cheaper to run , aft cabin so lots of room . Considered a true blue water boat . There are two main private cabins , one with a queen bed and one with bunk beds Also a pilot house boat for those crappy conditions or you can drive while watching dinner cook .Panoramic view forward on the galley . Has a wet hanging locker Not a race boat but way faster than Shaddy and goes to weather way better . PHRF of about 153 for those that follow performance handicap rating . Everything is tabbed in including the entire hull to deck joint - even the galley and hanging lockers . Currently getting a refit , new 120 wiring , new chargers , new breaker panel , fridge redone , new lights , new instruments and more .
Great place for Cook to land...cold beer and good food.
I'm always worried about you travelling, particularly soloing your sea journeys from across vast oceans. You embodied Cpt. Cook himself back then. Thanks for sharing your travels! Be safe!
good to have you back in our vision, Captain. Let's see that bar, dude! - Darcee
3 ball birds-??? Oh my lord.
Onwards and upwards. I've been trying for some time to figure out why you have the boom sheeted in somewhat when you're running before the wind. Look at your novel preventer attached to the reefing point, got me noticing those running backstays. Now I understand. Kind of...
Great to hear from you Barry. Stay safe.
I think several viewers were confused, as was I, because although we know the videos are not real time, the ‘See you in a month’ on the previous video had some of us figuring (incorrectly) that the next video would be from the other side of the IO. Glad it’s all resolved and that you are safe after the crossing. Well done sir!
My dear SeaDog, for a walk you must wear nautical shoes that are not torn and for coral sand and shallow water so that you don't step on something inappropriate you must use: Vibram FIVE Fingers Men's are resistant to water and hard ground, you can even run with them. P.S. Take care of your legs and feet, they are already WARNING you
My Dear SeaDog Sunset Prediction App Tides Planner App Today there is no longer a need for those tedious and extensive hydrographic tables.

👍
Thumbs UP, everyone!
Barry welcome to Australia 😢
Hi Barry. Great to have you back. Your recordings are never boring mate. Far from it, you Brighton my days up no end. Keep em coming mate. stay safe.
You mispronounced Champlain….greatest explorer…
Is "keel envy" an established phrase?
Thanks for sharing. Capt cook sailed from my home in the uk. Cheers : brian in nz.
Got really into your videos in the past I often imagine myself in your position I love the idea and romance of sailing but I get terribly sea sick unfortunately. Was thinking the other day not seen your videos in a while glad to see your back keep up the good stuff George from drizzly Cornwall.
Was Captain James T. Kirk morphed from Captain James Cook?
Strange trip, didn't realise that the Indian Ocean is in between Cairns and Cooktown.Your audience needs to check their geography with some of there comments. Glad you made the 2day trip in a month.Avid watcher
great show seadog!
Welcome back to our screens Bazza!
An old dog can learn some new tricks, lovely bit of sailing great to see.
Hope you managed to get ashore on Lizard, it’s an experience albeit an expensive one. Had the chance to go ashore there half a dozen times over 30years. Worked for the Australian institute of Marine Science who had a work/research station there. Rgds. irishseadog. ☘️👍🏼
Learned a bit about Cooktown and Cape York Peninsular from _Bush Tucker Man_ back in the early 80's - miles of empty beaches, what's not to like?
Good too see you back Barry and I'm always enjoy the video's you make. Wish you all the best with you're bloody feet and hope it's heeling fast. Greetings from the North-east off the Netherlands.
1:20 "the very rare three testicled bird...." 👍
That is not the correct way to add a preventer to your mainsail if you gybe you are in danger of ripping that sail
I've been waiting too long for this
Hej.... show more maps, where are you going from where....
Dear Barry, there are people for about 50'000 years in Australia and not only after Cook arrived. I think also at the Daintree River and the Cape Yorh penisula. Today we call this people Aboriginas.
You failed to mention Cape Tribulation which is the beach Cook initially pulled into for emergency repairs before heading on to what would eventually become Cooktown !
So glad that crossing’s behind you! This was a great episode, but do you keep a simple first aid kit on your boat?😅. Ouch!
Ray Parkin’s H M Bark Endeavour gives a great account of Cook’s passage through the GBR including the grounding and escape from Endeavour Reef.
Thanks for that!
I live in Cooktown mate..been looking out for you for sometime😊 pretty bloody windy aye.
Berry is on his way to South Africa, this is an old video
No it is a new video. Im a few months on yes. Videos take time to produce and are so not in realtime. Editing voice overs and production on this video was done last week.
Great episode Barry 😀😀😀😀 Rob and Jan ,Tahlia Tiger. We are about to leave Gove in the Northern Territory 😀😀😀😀
Give it all shes got, ahoy
You are having a splendid life.
Come on $25 is not a lot to pay. They probably don’t cover costs 👎
I loved how you allowed us to explore the history of the area at the same time as the area itself, very awesome content!
Barry!! Bloody good to hear from you.
